What to do in the event of an accident with a rental car in Morocco?

In the event of an accident with a rental vehicle, it's essential to follow good practice and respect current procedures. This article explains step-by-step what to do to manage the situation effectively and avoid any misunderstandings.

1. Safety first

As soon as an accident occurs :

- Protect yourself and others: Make sure everyone is safe. Turn on your hazard lights and use your warning triangle if necessary.

- Alert emergency services if anyone is injured: Call 190 (police) or 150 (gendarmerie) if anyone is injured.

- Do not move the vehicle: It is strictly forbidden to move the vehicle before the constator arrives. Moving the vehicle could complicate the insurance company's assessment of the facts and void your right to make a claim.

2. Contact insurance assistance

In Morocco, the procedure in the event of an accident is clear and requires the assistance of the insurance company:

- Check your insurance certificate: the assistance number is printed on this document, usually found in the vehicle's glove compartment.

- Immediately call for assistance: Describe the facts and specify the location of the accident.

- A surveyor will be dispatched to the scene: this professional is mandated by the insurance company to draw up the accident report. This official document is essential for managing repairs and determining responsibility.

3. Wait for the constator and fill in the report

- While waiting for the constable, take photos of the scene: Photograph vehicles, damage, license plates, and surrounding conditions (lights, signs, road markings).

The constator will arrive on site to :

- Take note of accident details.

- Assess vehicle damage.

- Complete the joint accident report, which must be signed by the parties concerned.

4. Inform the rental company

After contacting the insurance company, also notify the rental company:

- Give them details of the accident and the accident report.

- Follow their instructions, which may include replacing the vehicle or taking other steps.

5. Understanding your guarantees and insurance

Here's what your rental contract covers:

- Civil liability: Compulsory, covering damage caused to third parties.

- Deductible: Maximum amount payable by you in the event of an accident, set at 20% of the replacement value of the vehicle.

In the event of an accident, your bank card may also offer additional cover, depending on its terms and conditions.

6. Mistakes to avoid

- Moving the vehicle: This can complicate the assessment of responsibility and invalidate the accident report. Leave the vehicle in place until the inspector arrives.

- Not reporting the accident: Immediately inform assistance and the rental company.

- Ignore minor damage: Even minor damage must be declared to avoid unforeseen penalties.

7. If you are responsible or in the absence of a report

In the event of liability or if no report is drawn up :

- An estimate will be drawn up: An initial estimate for repairs will be provided by the rental company.

- Coverage via deductible: You will be required to pay all or part of the deductible, depending on the amount of damage. With us, the deductible is 20% of the replacement value of the vehicle.

- Cost dispute: If you dispute the estimate :

- You can request the intervention of a sworn expert at your own expense to reassess the damage.

At FB RENT, we do our best to make your car rental experience simple and seamless. However, one question often comes up: what is pre-authorization and why is it necessary? Here's everything you need to know.

What is pre-authorization?

When you rent a vehicle from us, we pre-authorize your credit card.
This is a sum of money temporarily blocked, but not debited, which serves as a guarantee for the duration of the rental.

Why do we pre-authorize?

Pre-authorization allows us to guarantee :

  • Payment in the event of damage to the vehicle.
  • Costs not covered by the basic contract, such as changing the drop-off location or any fines.

This is common practice and essential to ensure a smooth rental experience for everyone.

How much will be blocked?

The amount depends on a number of factors, such as the type of vehicle you are renting. We always inform you of the exact amount before finalizing the contract, to avoid any surprises.

When will the money be released?

As soon as you return the vehicle to us in its original condition, we ask your bank to release the funds.
For your information, the release time depends on your bank, and can take from 3 to 15 working days. If you have a credit card, the process may be faster.

In the event of additional charges, the balance will be refunded within 5 to 20 working days.

A few tips for a stress-free rental

  • Check your credit card limit before renting to avoid being refused payment.
  • Inspect the vehicle with us on departure and return. We are always available to answer your questions.
  • Choose a credit card to simplify the pre-authorization process.
