The stone desert at the gates of Marrakech
The Agafay desert is a lunar expanse of stones and arid hills just 30 minutes south-west of Marrakech. Very different from the Saharan sand desert, it offers an instant change of scenery and is home to luxury tented camps loved by international clients. FB Rent delivers your car to Marrakech-Menara airport (RAK) or directly to your Agafay camp.
Agafay has become a must on luxury Marrakech itineraries: sunset dinners, camel rides, quad, hot-air balloon, yoga retreats. The camps offer Saharan glamour without the 8-hour drive to Merzouga. Our Agafay service: - RAK airport delivery — 30 minutes in an SUV, paved road to the desert edge - Direct camp delivery on request (Inara, Scarabeo, Agafay Luxury, Kasbah Bab Ourika, La Pause…) - Right-sized fleet: SUV mandatory for the dirt tracks to the camps - All-inclusive: unlimited mileage, full insurance, GPS, 24/7 assistance - GPS guidance: our drivers share the exact camp coordinates (Google Maps is unreliable here)
Agafay can be done as a half-day, full day or starlit night: - High-end camps — Inara Camp, Scarabeo Camp, Agafay Luxury Camp, La Pause: luxury Berber tents, gastronomy, hammam - Sunset at the panoramic point above Agafay — extraordinary ochre colours - Dinner under tents with Berber show — traditional yet authentic - Quad or buggy — marked tracks, guaranteed thrills - Camel ride — often at sunset - Hot-air balloon — dawn departure from Lalla Takerkoust, Atlas views - Yoga & wellness retreats — several camps offer 3–7 day stays Combine with: - Marrakech (medina, Jardin Majorelle, Bahia): 30 min, A8 - Lalla Takerkoust: 20 min — reservoir lake, lakeside restaurants - Imlil and Atlas: 1 hr 30 min — hiking, Toubkal - Ouarzazate and sand desert (for the other style): 4 hrs via Tizi n'Tichka
Agafay is an area, not a town — a few things to know: - No airport on site — RAK (Marrakech-Menara) 30 minutes via the Lalla Takerkoust road - SUV essential: main road is paved but the last 2–5 km to camps are dirt tracks, sometimes technical in winter after rain - GPS coordinates: Google Maps is unreliable — ask for the camp coordinates on arrival - No mobile signal in some zones — download offline maps - Continental climate: very hot in summer days (40°C), very cold winter nights (5°C). Winter = ideal season (15–22°C by day, clear sky) - No petrol station: fill up in Marrakech before leaving - Camp overnight: amazing for stargazing, but book well ahead (good camps are often full) - Photos & drones: allowed, except near neighbouring camps (guests' privacy)
About 30 km, 30–45 minutes depending on camp and traffic. Main road is paved up to Lalla Takerkoust, then dirt tracks to the camps. Our RAK or Marrakech city centre delivery saves time.
An SUV is mandatory — Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan, Mercedes V-Class (for groups). Main roads are fine for a sedan, but the last kilometres to camps need ground clearance and ideally AWD. See [vehicle guide](/aide/choisir-voiture-pour-maroc).
October to April is ideal: 18–25°C days, clear sky, cool but pleasant nights in heated tents. Summer (Jun–Aug) is too hot. March and November are luxury tourism peaks.
A half-day or full day is enough to discover (sunset lunch or dinner). A night in camp is the iconic experience: arrive late afternoon, dinner under tents, stargazing, Berber breakfast. 2–3 nights for a true retreat (yoga, hammam, disconnect).
Generally yes — Inara, Agafay Luxury, Scarabeo are kid-friendly. Some boutique camps are adults-only (check at booking). Kids' activities are often offered (short camel ride, Berber workshop).
Both. Most clients pick up at RAK or in Marrakech city centre (medina, Hivernage, Palmeraie). For combined Marrakech + Agafay stays, we deliver at the start in Marrakech and you keep the car until final checkout.
